mine was constrcted of 4" pvc ... I would tape a tennis ball on the end of a 500ml plastic bottle ... I had a rather ingenious detonator design that would ignite a small wad of steel wool enclosed in the capped end of the plastic bottle ... when I dropped the bottle with tennis ball attached down the tube, it would go off about 85% of the time and launch the tennis ball , often with pieces of bottle attached, about 50-100 yards ... was great fun ... kids in neighborhood loved it ...

How did you ignite the steel wool? Did it ignite when it hit the end of the tube or did something else ignite it?

you'll shoot your eye out !!!

think 12v battery, coat hanger wire, aluminum foil ... many ways to do it ... just need a conductor on the bottle that leads inside and connects to the steel wool and something for that conductor to make contact with when it slides in the tube ... can think of 100 ways to do it ...

wear eye and ear protection ... just in case ... as you have found out, this stuff is dangerous if it gets away from you ...

It's always a good idea to wear extra protection, you never really know how something is going to react.
Sounds like a good idea with the steel wool, I usually just use thin pieces of wire to ignite it, but the solder joints take a while. Alligator clips will be destroyed every 20 shots or so depending on the design.
